Terms of Service
The short version: ButterLaps is a precision tool for editing lap markers in your own .fit files. Everything runs in your browser. Keep a copy of your original files, verify exports before relying on them, and be excellent to each other.
1. Acceptance of these terms
By using ButterLaps (the "Service"), you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service. The Service is operated by an individual developer ("we", "us").
2. What the Service is
ButterLaps is a browser-based editor for lap boundaries inside FIT activity files. All processing happens locally on your device — your files are never uploaded to us. The Service edits only lap-related data and is designed to preserve all other contents of your file unchanged.
ButterLaps is an independent tool. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Garmin, Strava, Stryd, or any other device maker or platform. Those names are trademarks of their respective owners and are used only to describe compatibility.
3. Free tier and licenses
The editor is free and unlimited during the current public beta. After beta, exporting may be limited for larger activities; a one-time license removes that limit. A license:
- is a personal, non-transferable license for one person, usable on your own devices;
- does not expire and includes future updates to the Service;
- may not be resold, shared publicly, or distributed.
4. Payments and refunds
Purchases are processed by our payment processor acting as the merchant of record — it handles checkout, applicable taxes such as VAT, receipts, and payment data under its own terms and privacy policy. Refund requests are honoured in line with the processor's refund policy; if something went wrong, contact us at [email protected] and we will sort it out.
5. Your responsibilities
- Keep your originals. Always retain a copy of the original activity file before editing. The Service writes a new file and never modifies your original, but you are responsible for your own backups.
- Verify before relying. Check exported files in your target platform (Garmin Connect, Strava, etc.) before deleting anything.
- Edit your own data. Use the Service only on files you own or have the right to modify, and only for lawful purposes. Do not use it to fabricate athletic results in contexts where that matters (e.g. competitions, leaderboards with prizes).
6. Intellectual property
The Service, including its design, code, and content, is our property. These terms give you the right to use the Service; they do not transfer any ownership. Your activity files remain entirely yours — we claim no rights over them. If you choose to share a file with us voluntarily (for example by email for support), we use it only to help you and delete it once the issue is resolved. See our Privacy Policy for details.
7. Disclaimer of warranty
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available". In plain terms: we built it carefully and test it against real device files, but we make no promises — not that it is bug-free, not that it is always online, and not that every device, platform, or service will accept an exported file. You use it at your own judgement, which is why section 5 asks you to keep originals and verify exports.
8. Limitation of liability
If something goes wrong — an exported file is corrupted, a platform rejects it, you lose data — we are not responsible for the knock-on consequences (lost race results, costs incurred, etc.). The most we can ever owe you is what you paid for your license. This does not affect any rights you have under consumer protection law in your country that cannot be waived.
9. Changes to the Service or these terms
We may change or discontinue features of the Service, and we may update these terms. If we make material changes, we will update this page and the effective date above. Continuing to use the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated terms.
10. Governing law
Any legal question about these terms is decided under the law of Montenegro, where the developer is based. If consumer protection law in your own country gives you stronger rights that cannot be signed away, you keep those rights regardless of what this page says.
